Kirk Nieuwenhuis (hand) could be placed on DL

Kirk Nieuwenhuis (hand) will swing a bat Wednesday before the Mets make a decision about placing him on the disabled list.
Nieuwenhuis was scratched from Tuesday's lineup after he suffered a right hand contusion during batting practice. The Mets could backdate a DL-stint to July 1, so he could be back shortly after the All-Star break assuming it's nothing serious. Jordany Valdespin would replace him on the roster if the Mets decide to place him on the DL.
