CHICAGO - New York Yankees right-hander Jorge DePaula will have elbow ligament replacement surgery Thursday and miss the remainder of the season.

DePaula, 24, was examined Wednesday by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. Andrews concurred with Yankees team physician Dr. Stuart Hershon that DePaula will need Tommy John surgery. Andrews will perform the operation.

DePaula pitched in three games this season, starting one and going 0-1 with a 5.00 ERA. He made four appearances last year, including one start, and had a 0.79 ERA. He did not have a decision.

The Yankees said recovery time will be about 10 months.

“He said it was tight. Watching him throw on the mound, I guess you were curious,” manager Joe Torre said. “We had an idea it was something when they decided to send him to Dr. Andrews to look at.”
