Charles Howell III outplayed Tiger Woods en route to a 2-and-1 victory in the Player Bracket in their opening match of the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship.
This was one of the best matches of the opening round. Neither golfer recorded and it was all square through 14 holes after they traded a pair of wins earlier. CH3 then took the 15th and 16th holes to press Woods against the wall. The old friends then halved the par-4 17th in the gloaming, thus ending Woods' stay in Arizona. It's just the third time in 13 appearance in this event that the former world No. 1 has been sent home after his opening round (2002, 2011). Meanwhile, Howell III will return on Friday to square off with the winner of Gonzalo-Fern'dez-Casta'o v. Francesco Molinari.
