Darren Fichardt hangs on to win Africa Open
Feb. 19, 2013 - 7:55 AM ET

Darren Fichardt carded a 1-under-par 34-37=71 in his final round of the Africa Open to record a two-stroke victory.

It wasn't the prettiest of titles but the South African will take it. He and fellow countryman Jaco Van Zyl shared the overnight lead. They remain tied through six holes today before Fichardt opened a margin he wouldn't relinquish despite a good effort to do so. Bogey-free 4-under through 13, he then dropped shots at 14, 16 and 17 to post 16-under 69-67-65-71=272. But on a windy day at East London Golf Club in the Eastern Cape province, he was able to hold on for his fourth career European Tour victory and first since last year's Saint-Omer Open. Van Zyl closed with a 73 to share second place with Gr'gory Bourdy (70) at 14-under 274. Garth Mulroy shared low-round honors on Sunday with a 67 to take fourth place outright at 13-under 275.
