Richard Sterne closed out a magical week at Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club's East Course with a bogey-free, 8-under-par 32-32=64 to record a seven-stroke victory over Charl Schwartzel at the Joburg Open.
Veteran gamers may remember the diminutive South African when he sat inside the top 50 in the world ranking a few years ago. A back injury prevented him from competing full-time for two years, thus bumping him from our consciousness. He officially elbowed his way back into our focus today. Sterne suffered just one bogey all week, surrounding it with an eagle and 26 birdies to post a tournament-record 27-under 63-65-68-64=260. He opened on the par-71 East Course and would share the lead after each of the first three rounds before distancing himself from Trevor Fisher, Jr., who carded a 73 today to finish T6. This is Sterne's sixth career title on the European Tour (including his second at this event), but it's his first since he won twice in 2009. "After all the hard work and the time out with injury, I did think whether I was ever going to win again," he said. "At one point the pain was so bad that I even wondered if I'd ever play golf again. But now I know I can."
