- SAN FRANCISCO - Andrew Simpson, a 36-year-old British sailor who twice won Olympic medals, dies when his Swedish boat capsized while practicing for yachting's top prize, the America's Cup.

- The new America's Cup boats have been likened to race cars. Now there's a question as sailors chase the oldest trophy in international sports this summer: How safe are these boats?

- Two NBA conference semifinals, both at 1-1: Miami at Chicago, 8 p.m.; and San Antonio at Golden State, 10:30 p.m.

- PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - Tiger Woods makes a charge that gives him the early lead in the second round of The Players Championship. He began the day four shots behind leader Roberto Castro.

- Four first-round NHL playoff games: Toronto (down 3-1) at Boston, 7 p.m.; NY Rangers at Washington (tied 2-2), 7:30 p.m.; Anaheim (up 3-2) at Detroit, 8 p.m.; St. Louis (down 3-2) at Los Angeles, 10 p.m.

- DARLINGTON, S.C. - Brad Keselowski and Matt Kenseth celebrate partial victories over NASCAR, even though both race this weekend at Darlington Raceway without their crew chiefs.

- INDIANAPOLIS - This year's Indianapolis 500 will be different. Speeds are expected to be up, and favorites are hard to find. And neither Roger Penske nor Chip Ganassi is coming to Indianapolis with a win.

- DETROIT - The Cleveland Indians, winners of four in a row and 10 of 11, can pull into a tie for the AL Central lead when they play the first-place Tigers. Max Scherzer (4-0) starts for Detroit. Game starts 7 p.m.

- FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Geno Smith has fired his agents and been knocked not only for his play but his predraft interviews. The West Virginia quarterback is ready to put that aside when the Jets open rookie camp.

- SAN DIEGO - Manti Te'o goes through his first NFL practice when he and the other San Diego Chargers rookies open a minicamp.

- MADRID - Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova reach the Madrid Open semifinals. Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray play in separate quarterfinals.
