Gay last man standing in Humana shootout
Jan. 20, 2013 - 7:50 PM ET

Brian Gay signed for a bogey-free 9-under-par 30-33=63 to join David Lingmerth and Charles Howell III in a playoff at the Humana Challenge that he would eventually win with birdies on each of the two playoff holes.

Gay was a bulldog, quickly pouncing on 54-hole leader Scott Stallings with nine birdies on his first 13 holes. Just when a 59 watch was in full swing, Gay cooled down the stretch with pars on his final five holes. He had a chance to end things in regulation but failed to convert a 7'9" birdie attempt on the par-5 18th. Things would be different in the playoff as he would roll in a birdie ahead of CH3 at the par-5 18th after Lingmerth was already out of the hole. Moving on to the par-4 10th, Gay hit is approach close after Howell III was in a bunker. Gay only needed to 2-putt from 5'3" for his fourth TOUR win. When he rolled in the birdie, he secured a berth in the Masters, PGA Championship, WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
