Overeem sentenced in nightclub incident

Overeem was sentenced to 50 hours of community service and to undergo anger-management counseling

UFC heavyweight contender Alistair Overeem avoided jail time for a January misdemeanor battery charge. He did not, however, get off without a punishment.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Overeem, 31, was sentenced Tuesday to 50 hours of community service and to undergo anger-management counseling as a result of a January charge stemming from an incident outside a Las Vegas nightclub.

Overeem was accused of shoving a woman on Jan. 2 at the Wynn Resort, according to a citation issued by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. The incident occurred just days after Overeem's first UFC win over Brock Lesnar at UFC 140.

"Being famous in the States is definitely different than being famous in Holland or anywhere else, and it comes with a lot of advantages and some disadvantages. You need to learn how to deal with it," Overeem told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "In Holland, I can just go to the grocery store and buy my eggs and milk, and here you might be under attack. Some situation may come up and you're drawn into it and suddenly it's world news.

"We don't have that in Holland."

Overeem, who will meet Junior dos Santos at UFC 146 for the heavyweight title on May 26, will now travel with security to avoid any future incidents. He has moved from his native Holland to Florida to train with the Blackzillian team.

According to the report, Overeem also received a suspended 90-day jail sentence. He'll have that matter dismissed at his next scheduled court appearance on Sept. 26, if the conditions are fulfilled.
