En route to medalist honors at today's open qualifier for the Sony Open in Hawaii, Danny Lee carded a 7-under-par 31-34=65 on the Arnold Palmer Course at Turtle Bay in Kahuku.
The 2012 PGA TOUR rookie opened with a bogey-5 but played out the string in bogey-free 8-under with an eagle and six birdies. Fifty-four-year-old Russ Cochran was the runner-up at 5-under 33-34=67; he erased one bogey with six birdies. The lefty will be making his 19th appearance at Waialae, but it'll be his first since 2004. Thanks to four birdies against only one bogey, Steven Alker grabbed third place outright at 3-under 34-35=69. The final berth into the tournament proper went to Josh Persons (bogey-free, 2-under 35-35=70), who outlasted Tim Wilkinson (34-36=70), Stephen Hale (32-38=70) and Steven Lecuyer (37-33=70) in a playoff. The final four spots in the 144-man field at Waialae will be filled by sponsor exemptions.
