Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim was less sound bite-y than Krzyzewski. “If conference commissioners were the founding fathers of this country, we would have Guatemala, Uruguay and Argentina in the United States,” he said Monday. “This audience knows why we are doing this. There's two reasons: Money and football.”
Other than the fan bases and the non-football, non-basketball teams who are along for the ride (which could literally be a very long ride from, like, Syracuse to Miami) I feel bad for the schools who looked for greener pastures in other conferences only to learn that you don’t get lush grass without a layer of bulls—t underneath it.
I’m not interested in new conferences. I don’t want rebound relationships to lead to a 22-team ClusterFCS. And I really don’t want to have “new rivalries” forced into my eyeballs. I liked the century-old Backyard Brawl, especially when the Big East could come down to that weekend in early December. Even Baylor will lose its longest ongoing rivals — Texas and Texas A&M — although theirs was less a rivalry than a tradition of bandaging their Bear asses after an annual beating.
I could muster some enthusiasm for the reshuffling if it led to the dissolution of the BCS or a postseason playoff system. At the very least, I’d take a pared-down bowl schedule with more meaningful games instead of a schedule littered with things like the Beef O’Brady’s St. Petersburg Bowl. Of course neither scenario is being considered as an option.
Instead I find myself sitting here refreshing conference websites, wondering which will be the next to change and doubting whether those logos will ever look right together. They’ll be on the same page, even though I’m not.
