Webb Simpson triumphs at the 112th U.S. Open

Webb Simpson claimed the U.S. Open as his first major championship title when he posted a final-round 2-under-par 68 at Olympic Club to finish the week one stroke clear of Graeme McDowell and Michael Thompson at 1-over 72-73-68-68=281.
Simpson looked to be headed down the wrong path, squaring bogeys on the second and fifth holes. He immediately bounced back with birdies on the sixth, seventh and eighth and added another on the par-4 10th before parring in the rest of the way. He split eight (of 14) fairways and landed 12 GIR while taking 28 putts with his long putter to make his way around Olympic Club. After tapping in, he watched from the clubhouse as Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell each had an opportunity to force a playoff with a birdie on the 18th. McDowell was the only one to find the putting surface, and when his birdie attempt slid by to the left, Simpson celebrated the victory.
