INDIANAPOLIS - The Columbus Destroyers will be looking for their first win in franchise history Saturday night when they visit the Indiana Firebirds at the Conseco Fieldhouse.
Columbus will begin its first season after relocating from Buffalo, New York. It will be a year of firsts for the Destroyers as new coach Earle Bruce leads the team and rookie quarterback Ryan Vena in their first season in Columbus, Ohio.
Bruce began his coaching career in the AFL during the 1993-1994 season with the Cleveland Thunderbolts and spent the 1994-1995 season with the St. Louis Stampede. In 2001, Bruce returned to the Arena ranks coaching the Iowa Barnstormers in the Arena2 League.
Vena will be guiding the Columbus offense, which struggled mightily a year ago. The 6-0 quarterback was a member of the Albany Conquest of Arena2 last season and set the league single-season passing mark with 4,460 yards in 16 games.
Indiana will also be represented by new coach Steve DeBerg this season.
DeBerg, who played 18 seasons as a quarterback in the National Football League, begins his first year as coach of the Firebirds with hopes of improving their 6-10 record from a year ago.
Indiana made other key acquisitions this off-season by adding quarterback Kevin Daft and offensive specialist Mike Horacek, who has proven to be one of the top receivers in the league over the past few seasons. Horacek led the AFL in receptions with 135 in 2003.
The Firebirds hold a 3-2 advantage in the series. However, the Destroyers have claimed a victory in each of the last two meetings.
