Day 1 Recap - Hearts Rule

Hearts Bracket
Normally Phil Hellmuth and Daniel Negreanu losing in the first round would be breaking news, but that wasn't the big story. The NFL's all-time leading rusher, Emmitt Smith, upset David Williams. Hellmuth lost to cash game specialist David Benyamine, while Negreanu fell to the Unibomber, Phil Laak. In other matches, Tom Dwan outlasted actor Don Cheadle, Michael 'The Grinder' Mizrachi handled Vanessa Rousso, Gavin Smith defeated Gus Hansen, Andrew Roble beat Kara Scott and James Bord overcame Frank Kassela.

Spades Bracket
The story of the Spades Bracket was Phil Ivey losing to Daniel Cates as the consesus best player in the world couldn't make it out of the first round. Another top player, Patrik Antonius, one his first ever Heads Up match, beating Sorel Mizzi. In the other matches ... Doyle Brunson def. Jennifer Tilly, Dennis Phillips def. Chris Moneymaker def. John Racener, Carlos Mortenson def. Sam Trickett, David Oppenheim def. Eric Baldwin and Eugen Katchalov def. Faraz Jaka.

Diamonds Bracket
Jennifer Harman defeated 2009 Heads-Up champ Huckleberry Seed, while rising star Phil Galfond took down from WSOP Main Event champ Joe Hachem. Galfond will face ElkY (Bertrand Grospellier) in the Round of 32 while Harman takes on Erik Seidel. Other first round winners included Vanessa Selbst (def. Eli Elezra), Peter Eastgate (def. Chris Ferguson), Greg Raymer (def. Mike Matusow) and Phil Gordon (vs. Thomas Marchese).

Clubs Bracket
Former WSOP Main Event champ Scotty Nguyen lost to Barry Greenstein in their first round matchup, while Andy Bloch defeated John Juanda. Here are the rest of the results from the Clubs: Olivier Busquet def. Dwyte Pilgrim, Live Boeree def. Jason Alexander, Jason Mercier def. Ted Forrest, Ayaz Mahmood def. Annette Obrestad, Jonathan Duhamel def. Mel Whitmire and Antonio Esfandiari def. Nicolas Chouity.

Brunson beats Tilly
Doyle Brunson proved he's still one world's best poker players. Brunson beat Jennifer Tilly in the first round of the Spades Bracket. He'll face Dennis Phillips in the second round.

Mortenson bests Trickett; Moneymaker wins
Carlso Mortenson defeated Sam Trickett in the first round of the Spades Bracket, while Chris Moneymaker defeated John Racener. Mortenson will meet David Oppenheim in the second round and Moneymaker will face Daniel Cates.

Phillips tames E-Dog, Oppenheim advances
Dennis Phillips held off Erick Lindgren in the first round. Phillips will face the winner of Doyle Brunson and Jennifer Tilly. Shortly after, David Oppenheim took out Eric Baldwin. He'll take on the win of Carlos Mortenson and Sam Trickett.

Antonius marches on to Round 2
Patrik Antonius finally got his first win at the Heads-Up Championship after defeating Sorel Mizzi in the first round. Antonius had lost his three previous matches and will face Eugene Katchalov in the Round of 32.

Ivey upset
Daniel Cates beat Phil Ivey, generally considered the world's best poker player, in the first round of the Spades Bracket. Cates will face the winner John Racener and Chris Moneymaker.

Katchalov quickly downs Jaka
First-time Heads Up player Eugene Katchalov took down fellow rookie Faraz Jaka in the first round of the Spades Bracket. He'll face the winner of Patrik Antonius and Sorel Mizzi in the second round.

Emmitt Smith shocks David Williams
The NFL's all-time leading rusher defeated one of poker's best as Emmitt Smith defeated David Williams in the first round of the Hearts Bracket. Smith faces Andrew Robl in the Round of 32.

Dwan outlasts Cheadle,
It took a while, but Tom Dwan finally took out actor Don Cheadle in the first round of the Hearts Bracket. Dwan will next face David Benyamine.

Benyamine takes down Hellmuth
David Benyamine outlasted the Poker Brat, Phil Hellmuth in a long first round matchup in the Hearts Bracket. Benyamine will now play the winner of Tom Dwan and Don Cheadle in the second round.

G. Smith, Robl and Bord move on to Round 2
In other first round action in the Hearts Bracket, Gavin Smith defeated Gus Hansen, Andrew Robl downed Kara Scott and James Bord got past Frank Kassela. Bord and Smith will face one another in the second round while Robl takes on the winner of Emmitt Smith and David Williams.

Unibomber shuts down Negreanu
Phil Laak proved to be too much for "Kid Poker" Daniel Negreanu, as he beat poker's all-time live money leader in the first round. Laak will now face Michael Mizrachi.

Grinder stops Rousso
Michael Mizrachi became the first player in the Hearts Bracket to advance to the second round, beating Vanessa Rousso. Mizrachi will now face the winner of the Phil Laak vs. Daniel Negreanu match.

Hearts full of stars
The Hearts Bracket is about to begin and it's full of huge names in poker. Here are the matchups:

Duhamel outlasts qualifier
Reigning WSOP Main Event champion Jonathan Duhamel outlasted qualifier Mel Whitmire in the first round of the Clubs Bracket. Duhamel will face Antonio Esfandiari in the second round.

Juanda hits roadblock
Andy Bloch outlasts John Juanda in the first round of the Clubs Bracket. Bloch will face Jason Mercier in the Round of 32.

The Magician moves on
Antonio Esfandiari took out Nicolas Chouity to advance to the second round where he'll face the winner of Jonathan Duhamel and Mel Whitmire.

Busquet baffles Pilgrim; Mercier advances
Olivier Busquet ousted Dwyte Pilgrim in the first round. Busquet will face Liv Boeree next. Meanwhile, Jason Mercier defeated former Heads Up champ Ted Forrest.

Liv Boeree took down actor Jason Alexander in their first round matchup. She'll face the winner of Dwyte Pilgrim and Olivier Busquet in the Round of 32.

Greenstein bests Nguyen, baby
Barry Greenstein was the first to advance in the Clubs Bracket as he defeated Scotty Nguyen. Greenstein will face Ayaz Mahmood in the second round. Mahmood defeated Annette Obrestad.

Clubs Bracket begins...
Jason Alexander and Live Boeree will be at the main table as the Clubs Bracket begins. Also playing, Dwyte Pilgrim vs. Oliver Busquet, Jason Mercier vs. Ted Forrest, Andy Bloch vs. John Juanda, Barry Greenstein vs. Scotty Nguyen, Annette Obrestad vs. Ayaz Mahmood, Jonathan Duhamel vs. Mel Whitmire and Nicolas Chouity vs. Antonio Esfandiari.

Robl replaces Peat
In the Hearts Bracket, Andrew Robl will be playing in place of David Peat. He'll face Kara Scott in the first round.

Diamonds ends as ElkY advances
Bertrand Grospellier defeated Justin Young to finish out the first round of the Diamonds Bracket. ElkY will now face Phil Galfond in the second round. Next up ... Clubs Bracket.

The Mouth and Marchese go down
Greg 'Fossil Man' Raymer defeated Mike 'The Mouth' Matusow in the first round, while Phil Gordon took down Thomas Marchese. Gordon and Raymer will now play in the second round.

Harman upsets Seed
Jennifer Harman took down the 2009 Heads-Up champion, Huckleberry Seed, to advance to the second round where she'll face Erik Seidel.

Selbst, Galfond advance
Vanessa Selbst beat cash-game specialist Eli Elezra, while rising star Phil Galfond defeated former WSOP main event champ Joe Hachem. Selbst will now face Peter Eastgate in the second round.

Cunningham, Ferguson fall
It didn't take long for big names to fall in the Diamonds Bracket. Erik Seidel took out Allen Cunningham as Cunningham became the first player eliminated from the 64-player field. Soon after former champ Chris "Jesus" Ferguson fell to former WSOP main event champ Peter Eastgate.
