Sources told CBS Sports that the Hawks are "struggling to get the assets they are seeking" in a trade for Josh Smith, and the Hawks are not interested in taking back future salary in any deal.
Any team interested in acquiring Smith is reluctant to part with assets because Smith is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season and looking for a big payday. As a result, teams don't want to sacrifice much now if they're only going to have Smith for a short time. There is varying opinion of Smith's worth on the open market, but GM Danny Ferry doesn't need to rush into any move as the Hawks have plenty of cap space to work with in the offseason. The Bucks, Suns, Nets and Celtics have been linked to Smith, but nothing is believed to be close.
