Everton players celebrates with midfielder Phil Neville  after he scores his winning penalty shot on Saturday.

American goalkeeper Tim Howard saved a crucial penalty for Everton in its shootout win over defending champion Chelsea in the FA Cup fourth round Saturday.

After the match finished 1-1 following extra time, the United States international brought Everton back into the shootout by batting away Nicolas Anelka's attempt on Chelsea's third kick.

Ashley Cole then sent his kick over the crossbar, allowing Phil Neville to convert the winning spot kick for Everton and complete a 4-3 shootout victory.

Leighton Baines' stunning free kick with a minute remaining in extra time canceled out Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard's close-range strike in the 104th.

Everton avenged its defeat to Chelsea in the 2009 final and will play Reading in the fifth round on March 1.

Chelsea was trying to become the first side to win three straight FA Cups since Blackburn achieved the feat between 1884-86.

Manchester United required a headed goal by defender Wes Brown to edge past nonleague side Crawley 1-0 in a last-16 match.

Crawley plays in the fifth tier and is 93 places below United in the league ladder, but took the 11-time champions all the way at Old Trafford. The visitors almost nicked a shock draw when substitute Richard Brodie headed against the crossbar in the final seconds.

United, which played a second-string team but brought on star striker Wayne Rooney for the second half, was hanging on in the last 10 minutes and had Brown to thank for his 28th-minute glancing header from Darron Gibson's textbook cross.

In the two other fifth-round matches, Premier League sides Birmingham and Stoke eased to 3-0 home victories over Sheffield Wednesday and Brighton, both in England's third tier.

Arsenal travels to London minnow Leyton Orient for a last-16 match Sunday, when Manchester City hosts third-tier side Notts County in a fourth-round replay.

Spanish League
Karim Benzema scored in the sixth minute after a great individual effort from Angel Di Maria, and Ricardo Carvalho added a goal in the 41st as Real Madrid beat visiting Levante 2-0 to move within two points of league-leading Barcelona.

Real coach Jose Mourinho extended his home league unbeaten streak to nine years. The last time the former Chelsea and Inter Milan manager lost a league match at his home stadium was when FC Porto was defeated 3-2 by Beira Mar in February 2002.

Valencia managed a scoreless draw with Sporting Gijon and is three points ahead of fourth-place Villarreal. Barcelona hosts Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

Italian League
Inter Milan closed within two points of first-place AC Milan, beating visiting Cagliari 1-0 as defender Andrea Ranocchia scored in the seventh minute.

Also Bologna needed a last minute header from Daniele Paponi to win 1-0 against Palermo, which finished a man short after Santiago Garcia was ejected.

German League
Paraguay striker Lucas Barrios scored one goal and was involved in the other as Bundesliga leader Borussia Dortmund won 2-0 at home against St. Pauli.

St. Pauli could only muster one attack before Dortmund took the lead in the 39th minute through Barrios, who controlled Nuri Sahin's cross with his left before turning and slotting the ball with his weaker right past goalkeeper Thomas Kessler.

St. Pauli defender Ralph Gunesch was unlucky to knock a cross from Barrios into his own net in the 49th.

Hamburger SV won 4-0 against Werder Bremen, with two goals from Jose Paolo Guerrero. Freiburg beat Wolfsburg 2-1, Hannover beat Kaiserslautern 3-0, and Hoffenheim and Cologne drew 1-1.

Dortmund has 13 more points than second-place Bayer Leverkusen, which plays Stuttgart at home Sunday, and 16 more than Bayern Munich, which can cut the gap and reclaim third place from Hannover with a win at Mainz in Saturday's late game.

French League
Marseille beat Saint-Etienne 2-1 on goals by Lucho Gonzalez in the 68th minute and Loic Remy in the 78th, moving within three points of league-leading Lille.

Marseille's Andre-Pierre Gignac left in the second half because of a groin injury. Christophe Landrin scored for Saint-Etienne in stoppage time.

Scotish League
Hearts required an injury-time penalty save by goalkeeper Marian Kello to secure a 2-1 home win over Dundee United and consolidate third place in the Scottish Premier League.

Kello kept out David Goodwillie's attempt with seconds remaining, ensuring the hosts moved provisionally two points behind second-place Rangers — which has three games in hand over the Edinburgh side.

United went ahead through Barry Douglas, but Rudi Skacel and Marius Zaliukas replied for Hearts.

Rangers visits leader Celtic, which is five points clear at the top having played two matches more than its Glasgow rival, on Sunday.
