Pujols laughs off reported contract numbers
Albert Pujols - 1B - St Louis Cardinals
Feb. 17, 2011 - 9:55 AM ET

Albert Pujols said upon his arrival at Spring Training Thursday that he, his agent and the Cardinals had a laugh at the reported contract offer numbers that came out Wednesday.

We sensed that the reported $19-21 million per year offer didn't make any sense, and this confirms that. Pujols also said when asked of his asking price, "You guys are way off on what the numbers are you guys are throwing out there." The slugger reiterated that he "wants to be a Cardinal forever," and added that "if you want to call me greedy, you don't know who I am." We have no doubt that Pujols is being sincere in his desire to finish his career as a Cardinal, but obviously that's very much in doubt at this point. He and the team have an opportunity again after the season, but there will be plenty of bidders for the best player in baseball.
