DALLAS - College basketball coach Bobby Knight is back in the news. I'm not surprised. He's touched my life in so many ways.
When I worked out of the Chicago bureau for NBC News back in the 1980's, every time Knight had an "incident" at Indiana University with a fan, a student, a reporter, referee, school administrator, or he just decided to throw a chair onto the floor during a game, a crew and I would scramble to Bloomington to get reaction from students, faculty, the administration and, of course, from the coach himself.
The problem was Knight refused to be interviewed but everybody else had an opinion, usually a strong opinion about Knight, most of them favorable.
I remember we interviewed the father of one of the players, Steve Alford, after one of Knight's notorious tirades and the dad said he wouldn't have his kid play for any other coach in the country.
The dad was an Indiana high school coach at the time and now the son, Steve, is a college coach.
Eventually Knight got fired from Indiana in the year 2000 after a blowup with a college kid who the coach felt showed him disrespect. A year later he was hired by Texas Tech to take over the men's basketball program which was in pathetic shape.
Improvement in Texas
There is no question Bob Knight has improved the team at Texas Tech. They win much more often than they lose now..
But the one question that has lingered over the volatile coach in Lubbock Texas has been whether there be another "incident?"
Well, now that's been answered. This week, witnesses say Knight blew his stack in a local story. The target of his rage happened to be Dr. David Smith, a chancellor at Texas Tech.
One witness is quoted in the Lubbock newspaper as saying he was startled by Knight's degree of rage and that the coach's outburst was apparently "unprovoked."
There've been the usual flurry of meetings that follows one of these incidents involving Knight. There are reports he's been asked to sign a letter that will place him on an immediate 3-day suspension. He might miss a game if he does -- or maybe he'll quit.
It seems some things never change.
Arc's five up, five down: After No. 11 Michigan State's 58-48 upset of No. 3 Ohio State, you'd be a fool to discount the Spartans' national title chances now.
Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 15 points and Evan Smotrycz added 13, helping No. 22 Michigan remain unbeaten at home with a 70-61 win over Illinois on Sunday.
