Report: Hawks to target Howard in free agency
Dwight Howard - C - Los Angeles Lakers
Feb. 2, 2013 - 9:10 AM ET

The Hawks are "going to be right alongside the Dallas Mavericks" in attempting to sign Dwight Howard as a free agent in the offseason, sources told ESPN.

This is what we've known for a long time now. The Hawks are clearing a ton of cap space to be players in the offseason, Howard is from Atlanta and is close with impending free agent Josh Smith. The Mavericks interest is also nothing new, but neither team is a legitimate title contender, and Howard would be leaving behind a more talented Lakers team in order to jump ship, not to mention the irreparable damage it would do to his already shaky public reputation. For what it's worth, the Lakers continue to say that the team has zero interest in moving him prior to the deadline, something that should surprise nobody.
