Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the Red Sox tried to "steal" Mariano Rivera from the Yankees with a three-year offer.
The Angels did the same, but Mo turned down both deals and agreed Thursday to a two-year, $30 million pact with the Yankees. If the Red Sox were able to land Rivera, it's quite possible that they would have non-tendered Jonathan Papelbon before Thursday's deadline. Alas, the Yanks and Red Sox will both head into 2011 with familiar ninth-inning faces.
