Webb Simpson 54-hole leader at Wells Fargo
May 5, 2012 - 6:10 PM ET

Webb Simpson broke away from a log-jam to shoot a third-round 3-under-par 35-34=69 at the Wells Fargo Championship, and his 14-under 65-68-89=202 tally will afford him a one-stroke margin headed into the final round.

The Charlotte, North Carolina resident and Quail Hollow member circled five birdies to two bogeys in a round where he split eight fairways, landed 13 GIR and took 29 putts in the navigation of his home course. He's been money with the irons all week, ranking third in GIR at 83.3 percent. He's been almost as good with the putter, averaging 1.644 and ranking eighth in that category. He enters Sunday in search of his third PGA TOUR victory despite not having finished better than T21 in three previous Wells Fargo Championships.
