The long-term contract signed by Oliver Ekman-Larsson earlier this week will not be an impediment to a long-term pact between the club and goaltender Mike Smith.
The outstanding question, however, is whether Smith is interested in re-signing with Phoenix once he hits the free agent market this summer. Coming off a deal that paid him a relatively small amount of $2 million per season, Smith will likely be looking to earn a large sum for the first time in his career. Phoenix GM Don Maloney has made clear the team would like to keep Smith in the fold, saying "Our conversation with Mike continues, whether it makes sense to do something now or wait till the end of the season, it's really an ongoing evaluation. We all know Mike is important to us. We hope to sign him and we'd like to sign him and if we could do something sooner rather later, that'd be good. But that may not be in the cards until the end of the season."
