Flames' Mark Giordano slapped with $10k fine
Mark Giordano - D - Calgary Flames
Feb. 20, 2013 - 8:35 AM ET

The National Hockey League decided Calgary Flames defenseman Mark Giordano took his on-ice intimidation tactics too far in the second period of Sunday's 4-3 road victory over the Dallas Stars.

After a phone hearing Tuesday afternoon, the NHL's department of player safety slapped Giordano with a $10,000 fine ' the maximum allowable for a first-time offender under the collective bargaining agreement ' for slew-footing Dallas forward Antoine Roussel. NHL Rule 52 defines slew-footing as "the act of a player using his leg or foot to knock or kick an opponent's feet from under him or pushes an opponent's upper body backward with an arm or elbow, and at the same time with a forward motion of his leg, knocks or kicks the opponent's feet from under him, causing him to fall violently to the ice. Video evidence of the play shows Giordano doing just that to the rookie Star.
