The NHL has rejected Kovalchuk's 17-year deal
Ilya Kovalchuk - W - New Jersey Devils
July 20, 2010 - 10:45 PM ET

The National Hockey League has ruled that Ilya Kovalchuk's 17-year/$102 million contract with the New Jersey Devils was an attempt at circumventing the salary cap and they have rejected it on those grounds.

Kovalchuk was due to make $550k in each of the last five years of his contract, which significantly reduced the deal's annual cap hit. This isn't the first time a club frontloaded a deal in a probable attempt to get around the salary cap, but this deal was the worst offender to date. It remains to be seen how the Devils and Kovalchuk will react. We'll keep you posted.
