Johnson an easy choice for No. 1 in power poll

Claiming his fifth win of the season, Johnson stays atop power rankings

Jimmie Johnson's fifth win of the season also was his eighth top-five finish and 11th top 10 in 17 Sprint Cup races.

Jimmie Johnson's fifth win of the season made the driver of the No. 48 the easy top choice in this week's Power Poll for a second straight week. He has won at least five races in six of the last seven Sprint Cup seasons and 52 overall. Watch out in future weeks for Tony Stewart, who has now climbed to fourth and has three top-five finishes in his last four races. The weekly poll is a collaboration of Sporting News and Rowdy.com.

1. Jimmie Johnson (last week: 1st)
His second straight win means he and Denny Hamlin have won 10 of the first 17 races. No one else has more than two.

2. Jeff Gordon (3rd)
The expected payback against Gordon for Infineon sins didn't come at New Hampshire. Instead, the four-time champ got a tidy fourth-place finish.

3. Kevin Harvick (2nd)
Another fantastic day of being there at the end (5th place) after starting far from the top (24th). But Happy, you gotta win!

4. Tony Stewart (6th)
The steady march toward the top of the standings continued with a runner-up result at Loudon.

5. Kurt Busch (8th)
Busch has the "bump" part of the equation down. Now he just needs to work on the "run."

6. Jeff Burton (10th)
Todd Berrier should've been watching how much time Tony Stewart was making up on the short run of his off-sequence pit stops. Tires at the end were the right call, especially seeing how easily Burton was run down on that fateful restart.

7. Kyle Busch (7th)
Jeff Burton was irate at Kyle when the No. 18 spun him unintentionally in Charlotte. On Sunday, Kyle had the same fate at the hands of Burton in New Hampshire.

8. Denny Hamlin (4th)
Did well to battle his way back to the lead lap, but didn't have the adjustments to bring home a top 10. Disappointing.

9. Clint Bowyer (17th)
Fun fact—Bowyer has finished seventh, eighth or ninth in eight of 17 races this year.

10. AJ Allmendinger (14th)
Since the all-star break, Allmendinger has recorded an 11.6 average finish. That is better than Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, and teammate Kasey Kahne.

11. Ryan Newman (18th)
New Hampshire marked the first race this season in which both Stewart-Haas Racing drivers posted top 10s.

12. Dale Earnhardt Jr. (12th)
Things are definitely looking up for Junior. One more run like New Hampshire's (8th) will put Earnhardt back in the top 12 in Sprint Cup points.

13. Joey Logano (21st)
Through 17 races, Logano has as many top 10s as he did in all of 2009. And he's a threat to make the Chase.

14. Greg Biffle (5th)
Won the first Chase race in New Hampshire two years ago, but it's looking more and more like he'll have to hang on to make the Chase this year.

15. Matt Kenseth (16th)
The over/under on crew chiefs he goes through the rest of the year is 11.

16. Mark Martin (13th)
Five of the six Hendrick or Hendrick-affiliated cars cracked the top 10 at Loudon. Martin ended in 21st. Something seems to be missing.

17. David Reutimann (19th)
Rooty was 15th in the middle of the race, 15th at the end of the race and had an average running position of 14th. You have to admire his consistency.

18. Jamie McMurray (20th)
Never had the speed of teammate Juan Pablo Montoya at Loudon—but didn't have the wreck, either.

19. Carl Edwards (15th)
There's something seriously wrong in the Roush Fenway camp when a driver of Edwards' talent can't get out of his own way.

20. Juan Pablo Montoya (11th)
Last season Montoya seemed to have learned patience.  This season he seems to have forgotten it again.

21. Marcos Ambrose (23rd)
Followed up his heartache at Infineon by posting his third straight top-15 finish. It's what we expected all year from him.

22. Kasey Kahne (9th)
His car was good enough to win. His engine wasn't.

23. Martin Truex Jr. (25th)
A mediocre New Hampshire run probably spells the end to his Chase chances.

24. David Ragan (NR)
Outran teammate Carl Edwards and finished near Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth on Sunday. That's progress during a tough season.

25. Paul Menard (22nd)
His 2010 average finish (20.6) is nearly five spots better than his previous season best, 25.4, set in 2008.
