Antti Niemi became only the fourth rookie goaltender in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup.
He joins Ken Dryden, Patrick Roy and Cam Ward to win in his first season. Dryden was so green in net that he was still eligible to win the Calder Trophy (which he did) the following year. "He was very good," Flyers coach Peter Laviolette said of Niemi. "He's been good throughout the entire playoffs. For a young kid to come in and be able to do that, to grab hold -- I know it moved back and forth for Chicago through the regular season. He grabbed hold of it down the stretch [and was] very strong for them in the playoffs."
