Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti told Peter Tilden of 790-KABC that Matt Kemp's defense has been "below average" this season.
"Why is it? Because he got a new deal?," said Colletti. "Can't tell you. But you know, it's below-average. If this is the last day of the season and people are voting for the Gold Glove, his name is not even on the ballot. It's a shame that he would go from where he was a year ago to revert back to when the ball goes up in the air and you're not sure where it's going, or if it's going to get caught." The frustration is understandable, but to make this public is just not smart. Kemp has been below average according to defensive metrics this season (20 games), but it's crazy to criticize your star player when there are plenty of other things wrong with the roster as currently constructed, something Colletti is responsible for building.
