Brooks Laich (groin) skated on his own Wednesday and appears unlikely to start the season on time.
The fact that he's skating means the injury is likely minor and the Caps just don't want to rush things. A groin issue is the type of injury that can linger and get worse if not properly rested, so waiting for Laich to be 100 percent is the best option. In the meantime, Wojtek Wolski has been skating in Laich's place on Washington's second line and could make a case with a good first few games for extended minutes even after Laich returns.
