The NHL trade deadline will reportedly be held on April 3.
The 2011-12 campaign ended on April 7. Although the season has been shortened as a result of the lockout, the ending of it has also been pushed back. The result is the schedule won't be as condensed as many might assume. It's also worth noting that teams can now retain part of their player's salary and cap hit when they trade him, which should make it easier for competitive teams to stock up on rental players.
