The Toronto Maple Leafs have decided to part ways with General Manager Brian Burke.
To say this news is surprising would be an understatement. Burke was able to take a team in total ruin and begin to build a young core that could compete down the road. At the same time, they were never able to make the playoffs under him and the Leafs are currently suffering through the longest active postseason drought in the NHL. Burke also made some rather controversial moves, including the acquisition of Phil Kessel for picks that the Boston Bruins then used to grab some very promising youngsters in Tyler Seguin, Dougie Hamilton, and Jared Knight. Even still, it was thought that he'd get at least one more chance to redeem himself by overseeing the Leafs in the shortened season.
