Maddon: Fifth starter battle 'very close'
Wade Davis - S - Tampa Bay Rays
March 17, 2010 - 4:45 PM ET

Rays manager Joe Maddon said that the competition between Wade Davis and Andy Sonnanstine to be the team's fifth starter is "very close."

Both pitchers tossed four scoreless innings against the Red Sox on Tuesday night. Davis was once considered the heavy favorite for the job, but Maddon is saying not so fast. "Last night, we saw Wade like we saw him at the end of last year," said Maddon. "Sonnie looked yesterday like he never looked last year. To be able to reapproach what he did two years ago when he was a big part -- that September run, [Sonnanstine] pitched as well as anybody that we had, beating Boston in Boston that night was a big game. And [that's] kind of like what he looked like last night." Of course, the Rays could also be talking up Sonnanstine for a potential trade.
