Diamondbacks make series of cuts

Diamondbacks optioned INF Pedro Ciriaco, RHPs Cesar Valdez and Daniel Stange to Triple-A Reno; optioned LHP Leyson Septimo to Double-A Mobile; reassigned LHP Tom Layne, RHPs Kyler Newby, Wes Roemer, Bryan Shaw and Matt Torra, C Konrad Schmidt, INF Mark Hallberg and OF Collin Cowgill to minor league camp.
Valdez, 24, was 7-6 with a 4.78 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in 19 games (18 starts) with Triple-A Reno last season. He doesn't throw very hard, but the sinkerballer could be find his way to the majors in middle reliever or as a spot starter.
