Leafs GM Brian Burke sees James Reimer as a legitimate number one goaltender.
Reimer broke out this season with a 17-8-4 record with a 2.53 GAA and .923 save percentage in 31 games. The starting job should be Reimer's to lose going into the 2011-12 season, but we wouldn't be surprised if the Leafs make sure they employ a backup capable of assuming the number one gig if things don't go as planned. Regardless of Reimer's potential, young goaltenders are far from a sure thing and a successful rookie campaign doesn't always lead to a strong sophomore season. Columbus' Steve Mason is the most obvious recent example of this, but what he's been going through shouldn't be regarded as an isolated incident.
