Buzzer-beater lifts Houston past Memphis

Coleman’s leaner in lane upsets 4-time defending Conference USA champs

TULSA, Okla. - Aubrey Coleman scored 21 points, including a leaner in the lane with 5 seconds remaining, as Houston upset four-time defending Conference USA tournament champion Memphis 66-65 in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Willie Kemp scored 15 points for No. 2 seed Memphis (23-9), including its final five baskets, all on drives to the right of the hoop. His final shot put Memphis ahead 65-64 with 15.7 seconds left. After Coleman scored, Kemp was called for a double dribble while trying to get off a final shot.

Houston (17-15), the seventh seed, will play Southern Mississippi in the semifinals Friday.

Kelvin Lewis had 13 points, including a 3-pointer that put the Cougars ahead 62-61 with 2:06 left. Maurice McNeil added 10 points and nine rebounds for Houston.

Will Coleman had 14 points and eight rebounds for Memphis.

Tulsa 80, Marshall 64
Jerome Jordan had 21 points and 12 rebounds and Tulsa closed with a 27-7 run en route to a victory over Marshall.

Tulsa (23-10) will play top-seeded Texas-El Paso — a 76-54 winner over No. 9 Central Florida — in the semifinals Friday.

Ben Uzoh added 18 points and Justin Hurtt 15 for the fifth-seeded Golden Hurricane. Donte Medder had 11 points, including two 3-pointers in the decisive Tulsa run.

Tyler Wilkerson had 16 points and Hassan Whiteside had 14 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks for Marshall (23-9).

Tulsa trailed by nine early in the second half and 58-53 when Jordan scored on a slam to spark a 16-0 run. He had another slam moments later to tie the game at 58, then hit two jump hooks over Whiteside to make it 66-58.

Wilkerson picked up his fourth foul early in the surge and went to the bench.

No. 25 UTEP 76, UCF 54
Jeremy Williams scored 17 points, Randy Culpepper added 10 and No. 25 UTEP earned its 15th straight victory.

The Miners (25-5) used aggressive full-court traps to force ninth-seeded UCF into 12 first-half turnovers, then turned those takeaways into 15 points to build a 28-point lead by halftime.

Top-seeded UTEP advanced to face fifth-seeded Tulsa, the tournament’s host, in the semifinals Friday. The Miners, who moved into the Top 25 two weeks ago for the first time since 1992, are trying to build on their first outright conference title since 1987.

Isaac Sosa scored 10 points to lead UCF (15-17), which lost the teams’ only regular-season meeting by 37 points on its home floor.

Southern Miss 58, UAB 44
Angelo Johnson scored 17 points and No. 6 seed Southern Mississippi defeated third-seeded UAB.

Gary Flowers scored 14 points and R.L. Horton had 12 for the Golden Eagles (20-12), who will play No. 7 seed Houston in the semifinals Friday. Houston knocked off No. 2 seed Memphis earlier in the day.

Jamarr Sanders scored 10 points to lead the Blazers (23-8), who fell behind 16-2 in the first five minutes and never recovered.

UAB, which was ranked in the Top 25 earlier this season, shot only 39.1 percent from the field and made only 4-of-15 free throws.

Southern Miss was worse from the field, shooting 33.3 percent, but hit 25-of-30 free throws.
