APQ: Will Denis Clemente get drafted?
— Marquette, Kan.
A: I don’t think so. Clemente has been a fine college player at Kansas State since he transferred there, but he is a player who will have to look into playing overseas. The biggest reason is his size. At 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, Clemente isn’t physically equipped for the rigors of NBA play. And if any team might be thinking about taking a chance on Clemente, perhaps late in the second round, you have to be concerned a bit about his attitude. I’ve seen Clemente barking back at coach Frank Martin on the bench more than once. That’s not a good thing. Wally Judge, Curtis Kelly, Jacob Pullen, and Jamar Samuels are K-State players who might get drafted. Not Clemente.
Q: Can you shed some light on the freshmen class for North Carolina? Roy Williams has usually brought in some talented freshmen, but this year’s class seems really weak compared to prior freshmen.
— Wes, Huntsville, N.C.
A: I don’t think you can give up on this North Carolina freshman class just yet. These freshmen are not as skilled as John Wall or DeMarcus Cousins. Kentucky’s freshmen can cover some of their mistakes on pure talent alone. North Carolina’s freshmen weren’t in that class, but I wouldn’t say they were weak.
What they needed was some leadership. I’m not talking about Roy Williams. He didn’t change anything, but he also didn’t have Tyler Hansbrough. The Tar Heels took all their cues from Hansbrough the past three or four seasons. Love him or hate him, he set the tone at North Carolina. Williams didn’t have a senior cut from that mold this season. Marcus Ginyard and Deon Thompson couldn’t assume Hansbrough’s role, so these freshmen didn’t get what I would call a “proper basketball education.” The current state of affairs in college basketball means you don’t always have that terrific continuity with players heading for the NBA. The Tar Heels got caught in that gap and seemed to lose their passion for some reason. That part is a mystery.
Larry Drew II and Ed Davis evidently weren’t ready to become leaders either. Someone has to step up for the Tar Heels next season. The chemistry on this team simply wasn’t good. But I don’t blame the freshmen for that.
CBT: Drew Gordon is taking a different approach to SI's UCLA article than Reeves Nelson, one much more likely to result in hearing his name called come NBA draft day.
