Leland Irving has been limited to four games in the AHL because the Abbotsford Heat have three goaltenders.
Irving has done the worst of the three with a 2.94 GAA and .901 save percentage, although it's hard to read too much into those numbers given the small sample size. "A little competition is always good, especially between the pipes," Irving said. "For me, I have to be sharp every time I step on the ice, whether it's practice or morning skate or optional skate or even warmup. You just never know when you're going to be called up, and you've gotta stay ready." Before the lockout began, the plan was to having Irving and Henrik Karlsson compete for the Calgary Flames' backup gig during training camp. Now, even if the season is saved there will probably be a severely shortened preseason, so Irving might not get a chance to fight for the number two spot.
