Fehr to players: Still a lot of work ahead
Sidney Crosby - C - Pittsburgh Penguins
Nov. 9, 2012 - 12:30 PM ET

NHL executive director Donald Fehr's memo to the players after Thursday's negotiations has been leaked.

Fehr listed off some areas where the NHL and union are still far apart. He took issue with the NHL's desire to immediately bring hockey-related revenues down to 50% rather than ease the player's share down over time. He also is concerned with the NHL's positions on a number of issues. Among other things, the NHL still wants to limit contract lengths to five years and have limit the year to year variability of those deals to just 5%. "While we are meeting again, and while some steps are being taken, there is still a lot of work to be done and bridges to be crossed before an agreement can be made," Fehr said in summary. As long as the two sides are talking, there's hope, but this memo suggests that an end to the lockout isn't imminent.
