Cubs, Marmol avoid arb. on one-year contract
Carlos Marmol - R - Chicago Cubs
Feb. 4, 2010 - 10:21 PM ET

The Cubs and right-hander Carlos Marmol avoided arbitration on Thursday by agreeing to a one-year, $2.125 million contract.

Marmol requested $2.5 million and was offered $1.75 million when arbitration figures were exchanged last month, so they essentially split the difference. The 27-year-old right-hander amassed a 3.41 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 93/65 K/BB ratio in 74 innings with the Cubs last season, eventually taking the closer role away from Kevin Gregg. He can be erratic at times, but has the gig all to himself entering 2010.
