Getty Images for NASCARTelevision coverage of the Daytona 24 had just ended for the evening on Saturday and I still had a teeny morsel of strength left in me. I decided to watch as much of the Toyota All-Star event as I could.
What I saw not only kept me awake, but kept me glued to the television set until the event ended several hours later. I think I saw a star being born.
The Toyota event is billed as the Daytona 500 of short track racing or something like that — trite much? It features top drivers from lesser NASCAR touring series and often has a Sprint Cup or Nationwide driver thrown in to boot.
To be honest, I stayed up to watch mainly to watch the track: The event is held at Irwindale Speedway, I mean, Toyota Speedway at Irwindale. It is one of those great old short tracks which tends to produce very good racing. And, it just kind of reminds me of the late former Los Angeles Times racing writer and great friend, Shav Glick, who used to tell me about the place.
Anyway, a 16-year-old driver I had never heard of, Sergio Pena, had got into the field by winning a qualifying race on Thursday. On Friday, he capitalized and won the pole for the main event.
On Saturday, he cost me a good night’s sleep.
Next to him on the front row of the staring grid was Cup star Joey Logano. Behind was a large group of very good, experienced racers. I figured Pena would, at best, learn a lot.
Instead, he taught a lot.
For a couple hours, 225 laps and an endless string of nauseating late-night-TV commercials, Logano and Pena went at each other. Pena was nearly flawless. He finished second to Logano but not by much.
Got to tell you, I was impressed. I was also impressed with the interviews the kid gave and that can be big when the Cup teams come knocking on the day after his 18th birthday.
I think the kid was so good that next time he appears on television, the announcers will have stopped referring to him as Sergio Garcia.
Yep, I think I got a glimpse of stock-car racing future over the weekend. But then again, I was the guy who told Lakeside Speedway owner Marc Olson in Kansas City a couple years back that Clint Bowyer was good but would never get a ride in NASCAR.
