The Red Sox are considering extending their budget to make another offer to Jason Bay, reports Rob Bradford of WEEI.com.
Such an offer wouldn't include a fifth year, presumably, but could see a bump from the original $60 million price tag. If Bay was to accept the new offer, Boston would likely go over the luxury tax threshold. The deal would also throw in doubt the role of Mike Cameron and/or Jacoby Ellsbury. While Boston could use Bay's stick, it is difficult to see him returning to town.
