AP8. Redskins can spoil things for NFC East foes
Washington is in the midst of a lost season, one that already has claimed the job of Vinny Cerrato. But the Redskins play two primetime home games in six days, and they've got a chance to dramatically dampen the chances of two rivals to make it to the playoffs.
First up, the Giants on Monday night. At 7-6, New York needs to win. Then, the Cowboys come to town on Sunday night. At 8-5 and sinking, the 'Boys could be close to coming apart at the seams by the time they arrive.
Winning both games would be a great way to start the Bruce Allen era. Then again, it might make it harder to pull the plug on the Jim Zorn era.
9. The Suh slide begins
For the past several years, the first overall pick in the draft has been regarded as a curse, not a blessing. With the process of selecting an unproven player inherently a crapshoot, the only certainty has been that a ton of money will be paid to a player who might never earn a penny of it.
As a result, the league hasn't had to worry about a team intentionally tanking it in order to secure the first pick in the annual pool of college players.
This year, however, the emergence of Nebraska defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh could be causing the worst of the bad teams to consider laying down for the final three weeks of the season in order to secure the opportunity to make Commissioner Roger Goodell sound like he's calling for a pig at the Radio City podium.
Suh widely is regarded as the best prospect in this year's draft class, due to dominant physical skills and a maturity level suggesting he won't merely be content to have been the first pick in the draft (see Russell, JaMarcus).
So with the Bucs and Rams both stuck on one win after 14 weeks, the biggest victory might come from losing each of the next three games.
10. Cardinals will find a way to screw things up
The Week 13 win over the Vikings in primetime reminded us that these aren't the same old Cardinals. Monday night's seven-turnover debacle against the 49ers reminded us that maybe these are the same old Cardinals.
Given the recent news that coach Ken Whisenhunt has yet to receive an extension to a contract that expires after the 2010 season, we're inclined to believe that these are indeed the same old Cardinals — cheap, short-sighted, self-destructive.
The fact that the team has performed so well under those circumstances makes us wonder how good they'd be if they weren't cheap, short-sighted, and self-destructive.
We're more likely to find out whether those tendencies will rise up and bite them at some point between now and the end of the season.
