According to Howard Beck of the New York Times, the NBA and NBPA had agreed to a "stretch exception" before talks broke down on Thursday.
In essence, the exception would be available on a yearly basis and allow teams to waive a player and spread the remaining salary left on his contract over a number of years, thus reducing the cap hit incurred. The sides had also reportedly agreed to a one-time amnesty clause for teams to waive a player (with pay) and not have it count against the salary cap. Things will certainly be interesting whenever the two sides resume discussions at the negotiating table.
