Mauer, Twins begin talks on extension

Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that the Twins have begun extension talks with Joe Mauer's agent Ron Shapiro.
No word on any parameters of a deal, but team president Jerry Bell is confident about the negotiations. "Everything in time ... it'll work out ' I hope, and I'm pretty sure," said Bell. "I feel good about it because I think he wants to stay here, and we sure want him to be here and all of his teammates want him to be here." Mauer, who is likely to be named the American League MVP later this month, will earn $12.5 million in 2010, the last year of his contract.
