SEATTLE (AP) -Ken Griffey Jr. and the Mariners are closing in on a deal for another one-year contract.
A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press the announcement could come later Wednesday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not formally announced the agreement.
Griffey turns 40 this month. The contract is expected to be similar to the one-year incentive-laden deal he signed to return to Seattle for the 2009 season.
He hit .214 with 19 homers as a part-time designated hitter. Griffey is No. 5 on the career home run list with 630.
