Varitek has until midnight to exercise option

Jason Varitek has until midnight Wednesday to decide whether he wants to exercise his $3 million player option for 2010.
It's not clear what the hold-up is. Varitek may be searching for a starting job, but he isn't likely to find one and definitely won't be able to obtain the kind of salary the Red Sox must pay him in 2010. The 37-year-old hit just .209/313/.390 this season and .157/.250/.239 after the All-Star break.
