The Daily Express has reported that Rory McIlroy will accept PGA Tour membership for 2010, eight days before he originally intended to announce his decision.
Confusion turned this into a greater story than the actual impact it will have on his schedule. He made 11 starts on the PGA Tour this year, and would need to add only four more, a task easily within reach as proven by his fellow Euros that maintain full membership on both sides of the Atlantic. Plus, he's a lock to make the Ryder Cup team, so that doesn't figure in. "The European Tour will still be my home tour," McIlroy said. "I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea that I'm just going away to America because that is not what I'm planning. I just feel I will become a better golfer if I also play in America. I will be playing in world-class fields with more world ranking points on offer and the only way for me to get better is to play alongside better players ... I will never give up my membership of the European Tour ... I'm just in a privileged position where I play wherever I want and I earned enough money in US Tour events to get my card."
