NBCSports.com illustrationQ: Dan, I live 60 miles southwest of New Orleans , I have been a faithful Saints fan for 40 years. Saints fans have been lifted up many times in the past ,only to be dropped back down. Do you think this could be the year the Saints will win the Super Bowl.
— Joe J, Thibodaux, La.
A: It certainly could be, thanks to Sean Payton’s offensive mind and Drew Brees’ ability to execute Payton’s ideas.
The key for the Saints, I believe, will be their ability to sustain their running game throughout the season and their ability to continue to come up with takeaways. It also will help the Saints if they can secure home field through the playoffs — or at least avoid playing a playoff game in an outdoor stadium in a cold weather city.
Q: What’s with the Bears’ defense? I know Urlacher’s out, but can one player really be the reason why Chicago can’t seem to stop anyone?
— Justin Ballew, Peoria, Ill.
A: Urlacher’s absence certainly has been felt. As has Pisa Tinoisamoa’s. But you are right, it goes beyond that.
The Bears’ defense has not played with confidence or aggression of late. It’s almost as if the defenders don’t believe they can match up with a dynamic offense.

Q: Every season since 2005 LaDainian Tomlinson is achieving fewer yards and touchdowns per season. Is this due to the Chargers relying more on Philip Rivers passing ability, the poor play of the offensive line or LT's diminishing skills?
— Mike, San Diego
A: Probably all of the above, Mike.
The Chargers have become more of a passing team as their running game has become less impactful. LT still is a good runner, but he has not looked like the great one he was. Tomlinson was not 100 percent healthy for a much of this season, and that affected his performance as well.
Q: Can a player on injured reserve, come off injured reserve after the regular season is over, if the player's team makes the playoff?
— John Casale, Cranston, R.I.
A: Once a player is placed on injured reserve, he is out for the entire season, including playoff games.
