WEEI.com's Rob Bradford reports that the Red Sox and Tim Wakefield are close to finalizing a new two-year contract.
Boston holds perpetual $4 million options on Wakefield, but according to Bradford the new deal would guarantee him just $3.5 million in 2010 and $1.5 million in 2011. Various incentives could push his salaries higher, but obviously the Red Sox wanted to lower their up-front risk with a 43-year-old coming off back surgery.
