Red Sox decline option on shortstop Gonzalez
Alex Gonzalez - SS - Boston Red Sox
Nov. 8, 2009 - 6:40 PM ET

Red Sox declined SS Alex Gonzalez's $6 million option for 2010.

The Red Sox are hoping to bring Gonzalez back on a lesser salary, but couldn't justify paying him $6 million. The 32-year-old was excellent on defense but hit just .238/.279/.355 on the year. As it stands, the Red Sox currently don't have an everyday shortstop on their roster.
