How long can Favre, 40, hold up this season?

Vikings QB off to fast start, but the pounding, sacks may wear on him

Brett Favre's been sacked 18 times this season, sixth most in the NFL. That may not bode well for Favre as the season drags on, writes Dan Pompei.
Q: Why doesn't San Diego get rid of Norv?

Don Flynn, Hampton, Va

.

A: Because A.J. Smith and the Spanos family believed Turner was the best man for the job, and they haven’t seen enough evidence to the contrary to change their minds.

But if the Chargers (3-3) don’t play to their potential this season, Mr. Turner’s seat will get very hot indeed.

Q: Who do you think will be the last team to win a game this year? Do think any of the remaining no-win teams have a legitimate chance at 0-16?
John Klopfer, Ocala, Fla.

A: I can’t see the Titans going 0-16. The most surprising aspect of the season thus far is their 0-6 start. They have too much talent, and are too well coached, to continue losing.

Starting Josh Freeman could set the Bucs back in the short term but make them a little more potent late in the year.

Who’s on NFL’s ‘hot seat’?
The Bears are out of the playoff chase. What does that mean for Lovie Smith? How hot is his seat? Here’s your chance to rank all the NFL coaches.

The Rams look like the team with the least amount of hope, but I still would not expect them to go 0-16.

I wouldn’t expect any team to ever go 0-16. The league is so competitive that a winless season is very improbable.

Q: Hey Dan, what are the chances that Alex Smith actually plays better this time around? Or are the 49ers just wasting time the rest of this season by switching back and forth between him and Shaun Hill?
Alex V., Redding, Calif.

A: I would not write off Alex Smith just yet. Remember — this kid has talent — more talent, certainly, than Shaun Hill. Smith could be a late bloomer.

There have been some pretty unusual circumstances that have led him to struggle early in his career, including a series of injuries, and playing for five offensive coordinators (Mike McCarthy, Norv Turner, Jim Hostler, Mike Martz and Jimmy Raye) in five seasons. I’m anxious to see what he can do.
