Defending champs Heels face 3 big questions

Point guard, perimeter shooting and tempo loom large for North Carolina

North Carolina coach Roy Williams laughs with Marcus Ginyard during the 2007-08 season. Ginyard missed most of last season with a foot injury, but will be a key component to this year's squad.

Shooting
Freshman John Henson resembles Kevin Durant in so many ways it's almost expected he can fill the rim with off-the-catch 3-pointers. That's not his game yet. Henson is a developing shooter.

He brings astonishing athleticism and a great feel for the game. But if he's not a shooter, and if Ginyard has only 25 3-pointers in three previous seasons, and if that's not a strength for Drew (6-of-26 as a freshman) – this could be a problem. Freshmen Leslie McDonald and Dexter Strickland should help when they come off the bench.

"If you look at our team, one of the question marks is who is going to make some outside shots," Williams said. "How do you combat that? My way is to get more in the open court."

Pace
Ginyard has the body of a college small forward. There's no other way to put it. With him playing next to Drew, the Heels will have one of their biggest teams.

Carolina forward Deon Thompson is just one of the game's stars. Mike DeCourcy details the best.
This does not look like a team built for speed. Then again, the Heels appeared even less aerodynamic in 2005-06, when Frasor was the full-time point by necessity and they still generated 79.4 points per game.

Williams doesn't want to slow down because the system works, and it suits him.

"I think it's the coach's job to figure out how to get your five best players on the court," Williams said. "If that is a third big guy, then you've got to figure out how to change to get them out there. The strength of our team is going to be our size … why not get more of them in the game?

"I'm stubborn enough to believe I can make little changes, with a big lineup, and still run."

All the way to Indy? The Heels at least know how far they've got to go.
